Opposition to the president does not equal treason

Editor, The Transcript:

You chose to run a letter in the Dec. 20 Transcript that was very disturbing. The letter, by Nadine Jewell, said that, “GOP leadership stated they hoped” President Obama, “would fail, and that they would do everything they could to ensure he did. Sounds like treason to me

(emphasis added).”

Calling opposition to the president treason is unsettling. The founding fathers narrowly defined treason in the U. S. Constitution. In fact, it was the only crime defined in the Constitution. It reads, “Treason against the United States shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort.”

Opposition to the president does not fit that definition. Opposition to certain policies of the president is a protected constitutional right (see the First Amendment, for example). If opposing a policy of the president is treason, then I have commited treason when Presidents Bush (both), Clinton, and Reagan were in office.

Throughout history, tyrants have used a charge of treason to silence opposition, and our founders did not want political officeholders in our nation to wield such power. Alas, some on the Left in our country now favor authoritarianism to get their way, even to the extent of using charges of treason for political opposition. I pray for the future of our country.

Oh, Bobby, what a list of complaints. Yes, we know our new president is not of your choosing. Less than a year ago, President Obama took office with the economy and deficit on the crest of an avalanche in free-fall. Plus GOP leadership stated they hoped he would fail, and that they would do everything they could to ensure he did. Sounds like treason to me. If he fails, what happens to the U.S?

Since the cost of the Afghanistan/Iraq war was not in the budget, the U.S. had to borrow from foreign countries. Much of the deficit went to pay no-bid contractors and profiteers who were allowed to rip off millions that should have been used for our troops. While highly paid contractors had state-of-the-art equipment, our military scrounged junkyards to reinforce their vehicles and families paid for body armor.

When the economy came close to failing, both Presidents Obama and Bush gave millions to try to neutralize our problem. Greed took over the banking and mortgage CEOs and adequate funds were not used to help homeowners or create jobs. (I’m happy to hear a lot has been repaid or was never used.)

At one time, our nation thrived with management and labor as partners. Physical labor was honored. But after WWII, the disparity between the rich and poor escalated. Being rich was the new goal. CEO lifestyles improved while workers struggled. Finally, automobile labor unions demanded benefits, such as an eight-hour work day, five-day work week and job security.

In recent years, labor called for living wages, but CEOs weren’t eager to comply. Management came up with another goal. They sent manufacturing jobs overseas. Slave labor is less costly, and the CEOs could claim more millions. Of course, this meant many hundreds lost their jobs. We are no longer a manufacturing nation. Soon other companies adopted the strategy, including communications and banking organizations.

When the job force was reduced, people lost homes and health benefits. Because insurance pools followed job loss, premiums increased elsewhere. Small businesses could no longer insure their workers. They had to chose between letting workers go or dropping healthcare benefits. Owners saw a need for healthcare insurance reform.

In the U.S, we have the best of medical personnel, but health insurance people making multi-millions from premiums often stand between the skilled and professional physicians to deny claims needed to help patients. Health insurance does not do one thing to further healthcare. In fact, if a patient dies, the company wins. That is wrong. Affordable healthcare is a right. No one should die because an insurance company denies access or because a person is too poor to afford a doctor.

Save your blame, Bobby. Give Obama a fair chance. You will have time to play partisan politics closer to the election. Making Obama a hate target won’t change war policy, reduce the deficit, or make health insurance companies more responsible.

Michael Moore Upset With Obama

Posted by: Bob Cleveland | Comments (0)

An Open Letter to President Obama from Michael Moore

Dear President Obama,

Do you really want to be the new “war president”? If you go to West Point tomorrow night (Tuesday, 8pm) and announce that you are increasing, rather than withdrawing, the troops in Afghanistan, you are the new war president. Pure and simple. And with that you will do the worst possible thing you could do — destroy the hopes and dreams so many millions have placed in you.

With just one speech tomorrow night you will turn a multitude of young people who were the backbone of your campaign into disillusioned cynics. You will teach them what they’ve always heard is true — that all politicians are alike. I simply can’t believe you’re about to do what they say you are going to do. Please say it isn’t so.

It is not your job to do what the generals tell you to do. We are a civilian-run government. WE tell the Joint Chiefs what to do, not the other way around. That’s the way General Washington insisted it must be. That’s what President Truman told General MacArthur when MacArthur wanted to invade China. “You’re fired!,” said Truman, and that was that. And you should have fired Gen. McChrystal when he went to the press to preempt you, telling the press what YOU had to do. Let me be blunt: We love our kids in the armed services, but we f*#&in’ hate these generals, from Westmoreland in Vietnam to, yes, even Colin Powell for lying to the UN with his made-up

drawings of WMD (he has since sought redemption).

So now you feel backed into a corner. 30 years ago this past Thursday (Thanksgiving) the Soviet generals had a cool idea — “Let’s invade Afghanistan!” Well, that turned out to be the final nail in the USSR coffin.

There’s a reason they don’t call Afghanistan the “Garden State” (though they probably should, seeing how the corrupt President Karzai, whom we back, has his brother in the heroin trade raising poppies). Afghanistan’s nickname is the “Graveyard of Empires.” If you don’t believe it, give the British a call. I’d have you call Genghis Khan but I lost his number. I do have Gorbachev’s number though. It’s + 41 22 789 1662. I’m sure he could give you an earful about the historic blunder you’re about to commit.

With our economic collapse still in full swing and our precious young men and women being sacrificed on the altar of arrogance and greed, the breakdown of this great civilization we call America will head, full throttle, into oblivion if you become the “war president.” Empires never think the end is near, until the end is here. Empires think that more evil will force the heathens to toe the line — and yet it never works. The heathens usually tear them to shreds.

Choose carefully, President Obama. You of all people know that it doesn’t have to be this way. You still have a few hours to listen to your heart, and your own clear thinking. You know that nothing good can come from sending more troops halfway around the world to a place neither you nor they understand, to achieve an objective that neither you nor they understand, in a country that does not want us there. You can feel it in your bones.

I know you know that there are LESS than a hundred al-Qaeda left in Afghanistan! A hundred thousand troops trying to crush a hundred guys living in caves? Are you serious? Have you drunk Bush’s Kool-Aid? I refuse to believe it.

Your potential decision to expand the war (while saying that you’re doing it so you can “end the war”) will do more to set your legacy in stone than any of the great things you’ve said and done in your first year. One more throwing a bone from you to the Republicans and the coalition of the hopeful and the hopeless may be gone — and this nation will be back in the hands of the haters quicker than you can shout “tea bag!”

Choose carefully, Mr. President. Your corporate backers are going to abandon you as soon as it is clear you are a one-term president and that the nation will be safely back in the hands of the usual idiots who do their bidding. That could be Wednesday morning.

We the people still love you. We the people still have a sliver of hope. But we the people can’t take it anymore.

We can’t take your caving in, over and over, when we elected you by a big, wide margin of millions to get in there and get the job done. What part of “landslide victory” don’t you understand?

Don’t be deceived into thinking that sending a few more troops into Afghanistan will make a difference, or earn you the respect of the haters. They will not stop until this country is torn asunder and every last dollar is extracted from the poor and soon-to-be poor. You could send a million troops over there and the crazy Right still wouldn’t be happy. You would still be the victim of their incessant venom on hate radio and television because no matter what you do, you can’t change the one thing about yourself that sends them over the edge.

The haters were not the ones who elected you, and they can’t be won over by abandoning the rest of us.

President Obama, it’s time to come home. Ask your neighbors in Chicago and the parents of the young men and women doing the fighting and dying if they want more billions and more troops sent to Afghanistan. Do you think they will say, “No, we don’t need health care, we don’t need jobs, we don’t need homes. You go on ahead, Mr. President, and send our wealth and our sons and daughters overseas, ’cause we don’t need them, either.”

What would Martin Luther King, Jr. do? What would your grandmother do? Not send more poor people to kill other poor people who pose no threat to them, that’s what they’d do. Not spend billions and trillions to wage war while American children are sleeping on the streets and standing in bread lines.

All of us that voted and prayed for you and cried the night of your victory have endured an Orwellian hell of eight years of crimes committed in our name: torture, rendition, suspension of the bill of rights, invading nations who had not attacked us, blowing up neighborhoods that Saddam “might” be in (but never was), slaughtering wedding parties in Afghanistan. We watched as hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians were slaughtered and tens of thousands of our brave young men and women were killed, maimed, or endured mental anguish — the full terror of which we scarcely know.

When we elected you we didn’t expect miracles. We didn’t even expect much change. But we expected some. We thought you would stop the madness. Stop the killing. Stop the insane idea that men with guns can reorganize a nation that doesn’t even function as a nation and never, ever has.

Stop, stop, stop! For the sake of the lives of young Americans and Afghan civilians, stop. For the sake of your presidency, hope, and the future of our nation, stop. For God’s sake, stop.

Tonight we still have hope.

Tomorrow, we shall see. The ball is in your court. You DON’T have to do this. You can be a profile in courage. You can be your mother’s son.

We’re counting on you.

Yours,

Michael Moore

Due to the vagaries of local politics two Republicans are on the ballot in the special election in NY-23. Doug Hoffman, the conservative, clearly represents the main stream values and positions of the Republican Party. He opposes the stimulus, cap and trade, card check, the Democratic health care bill and the Obama Administration’s reckless spending binge. He is a pro-life fiscal conservative who is committed to restraining the growth of government. And Hoffman is committed to fighting and winning the war in Afghanistan.

Doug Hoffman is right on the critical issues facing America — and he is the only Republican who can win this special election. For those reasons I have chosen to endorse Mr. Hoffman and my leadership PAC has contributed to his campaign. I look forward to working with Doug in Congress and welcoming him into the Republican Conference.

Patriot Revival

Posted by: Bob Cleveland | Comments (0)

After reading this article it’s apparent to me that anyone that opposes Obama and his socialist agenda will be painted with one big brush and called “nuts” or spreading paranoia. I noticed in the article how they try to compare”Oath Keepers” to Timothy McVeigh in a very subtle way.

Nothing in the article says that citizens are concerned with the Constitution not being followed. Let’s see, the government has taken over our banks, the auto industry and controlled CEO’s salaries. A new bill being proposed gives  Obama control of the Internet and Obama, Pelosi and Reid working on gun control legislation. Now, Obama,  Reid and Pelosi attacking Fox News.  And oh yes, taking contol of our Health Care and bankrupting the country.  We are supposed to just sit back, lose our freedom and trust Obama. I don’t think so!

When town hall meetings took place all over the country and people objected to government health care control, Pelosi and Reid just called them “Astro Turfers” not real.

So now it has come down to being Patriotic or opposing Obama and his socialist agenda makes you a bad person.  I have received several copies of the email going around about joining the “Oath Keepers” I honestly do not know if that is the answer, I know nothing about the group or it’s leaders.  I do believe we simply cannot sit by and do nothing while our freedom just slips away. I hope you read the article and then you can make up your on mind.

Bobby

READY TO REVOLT: Oath Keepers pledges to prevent dictatorship in United States

Group asks police and military to lay down arms in response to orders deemed unlawful

By ALAN MAIMON

LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Depending on your perspective, the Oath Keepers are either strident defenders of liberty or dangerous peddlers of paranoia.

In the age of town halls, talk radio and tea parties, middle ground of opinion is hard to find

Launched in March by Las Vegan Stewart Rhodes, Oath Keepers bills itself as a nonpartisan group of current and retired law enforcement and military personnel who vow to fulfill their oaths to the Constitution.

More specifically, the group’s members, which number in the thousands, pledge to disobey orders they deem unlawful, including directives to disarm the American people and to blockade American cities. By refusing the latter order, the Oath Keepers hope to prevent cities from becoming “giant concentration camps,” a scenario the 44-year-old Rhodes says he can envision happening in the coming years.

It’s a Cold War-era nightmare vision with a major twist: The occupying forces in this imagined future are American, not Soviet.

“The whole point of Oath Keepers is to stop a dictatorship from ever happening here,” Rhodes, a former Army paratrooper and Yale-trained lawyer, said in an interview with the Review-Journal. “My focus is on the guys with the guns, because they can’t do it without them.

“We say if the American people decide it’s time for a revolution, we’ll fight with you.”

That type of rhetoric has caught the attention of groups that track extremist activity in the United States.

In a July report titled “Return of the Militias,” the Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law Center singled out Oath Keepers as “a particularly worrisome example of the Patriot revival.”

The Patriot movement, so named because its adherents believe the federal government has stepped on the constitutional ideals of the American Revolution, gained traction in the 1990s and has been closely linked to anti-government militia and white supremacist movements.

The movement is blamed for spawning Timothy McVeigh, who bombed a federal building in Oklahoma City in 1995, killing 168 people.

“I’m not accusing Stewart Rhodes or any member of his group of being Timothy McVeigh or a future Timothy McVeigh,” law center spokesman Mark Potok said. “But these kinds of conspiracy theories are what drive a small number of people to criminal violence. … What’s troubling about Oath Keepers is the idea that men and women armed and ordered to protect the public in this country are clearly being drawn into a world of false conspiracy theory.”

Oath Keepers got some unwanted attention in April when an Oklahoma man loosely connected to the group was arrested for threatening violence at an anti-tax protest in Oklahoma City. Rhodes called the man “a nut” who had no real affiliation with his group.

Nonetheless, Potok’s group now monitors Oath Keepers on its Web site blog “Hatewatch.”

Oath Keepers is not preaching violence or government overthrow, Rhodes said. On the contrary, it is asking police and the military to lay down their arms in response to unlawful orders.

The group’s Web site, www.oathkeepers.org, features videos and testimonials in which supporters compare President Barack Obama’s America to Adolf Hitler’s Germany. They also liken Obama to England’s King George III during the American Revolution. Read More→

No freedom of speech when it comes to Obama.

By Brad Hicks

Press Staff Writer

bhicks@johnsoncitypress.com

Dan Fuchs said business was just starting to pick up at his kiosk in the Mall at Johnson City.

Fuchs’ business, the Graphic Edge, printed slogans and pictures on items such as coffee cups, bumper stickers and T-shirts. He said more than half of his business came from the sale of anti-Obama merchandise. Bumper stickers with slogans such as “SOS: Stop Obama’s Socialism,” “Nobama,” and “Chicago got the party, but the country got the hangover” were displayed around the small stand.

Now it appears Fuchs is out of business at the mall, but mall officials say this decision was not based upon political views.

Friday afternoon, Fuchs was handed a lease termination notice by mall officials and signed by Mall General Manager Tembra Aldridge. The letter states that the option to terminate the lease agreement is effective 11:59 p.m. today and that he must vacate the mall premises and remove his property before then.

Fuchs said he was given no reason for this termination and was shocked and upset. Thursday evening, Fuchs said mall officials met with him and told him to take down the anti-Obama items on display by closing time or face immediate eviction.

“I was upset about it, of course,” he said Friday prior to receiving the notice. “That’s my livelihood.”

Fuchs had been in business at the mall for around two months and hadn’t initially set out to create anti-Obama items. One day, he said a customer asked for an anti-Obama shirt to be printed. A few days later, he said another customer asked for another similar item.

The some of these items were put on display and most were completed upon customer request, Fuchs said. He said that around 60 percent of items being sold out of the kiosk was anti-Obama merchandise.

By Friday morning, Fuchs said these items had been take down.

Marsha Hammond, the mall’s marketing director, has a different take on that meeting. She said that Aldridge and Melinda Davis, the mall’s specialty leasing representative, suggested that Fuchs also display items in support of Obama. The mall had received several complaints from customers regarding the anti-Obama items, she said. Hammond also said that it was Fuchs’ decision to remove the items completely from display.

“That is not true,” Fuchs said. “I was given no choice. I was given, (Thursday) night at about 4:30, the option of taking it down or get out, receive an eviction at closing time.”
