So Called Tort Reform

Today the House passed House Bill 1602, the so -called tort reform bill.  Typically, most all Republicans support tort reform, but today there were X Republicans who voted against this bill.    Their votes against this bill demonstrate that at least some Republicans have realized that tort reform is NOT a conservative idea!  What is conservative about taking away from individuals and businesses the right to contract and set an attorney’s fee?  Aren’t conservatives supposed to stand for taking responsibility for one’s actions?  Like most tort reform bills, this bill would allow negligent parties, whether they be reckless drivers or greedy businesses to escape full responsibility for the damages they cause.  We trust Oklahoma juries enough to let them give the death penalty to criminals, so why would we not also trust Oklahoma juries to set damages awards?

Here is the “honor roll” of Republicans who respect the right to contract:

Gus  Blackwell -Goodwell

Rex Duncan -Sand Springs

Fred Jordan – Jenks

Charles Key – Bethany

Skye McNiel – Bristow

Randy Terrill – Moore

John Trebilcock – Broken Arrow
