Coach Fired After Winning 100 to 0

Dallas, TX – We told you earlier this week about a girl’s basketball team that beat another team 100 to 0. Now, the coach of the winning team has been fired.

Micah Grimes was the coach of the Covenant School girls basketball team. Earlier this month, his team posted a 100-0 win over Dallas Academy in a game that was marred by Grimes’ team continuing to keep the pressure up even into the fourth quarter until the team reached 100 points.

Covenant School Officials apologized last week, saying through a statement on the school’s website quote ”it is shameful and an embarrassment that this has happened. This clearly does not reflect a Christ-like and honorable approach to competition.”
Covenant even requested permission from the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools to forfeit the game, something the TAPPS says the school doesn’t have to request permission for.

No one at Dallas Academy is requesting the game be forfeited. In fact, Dallas Academy athletic director Jeremy Civello told the Dallas Morning News quote “We don’t think what happened is a reflection on those girls in any way. There are a lot of good people at that school. We hope this blows over.”

But, Grimes was unapologetic, saying that the 100-point win “just happened” and later posting a message on a youth basketball website, disagreeing with school officials over the public apology.

“We played the game as it was meant to be played and would not intentionally run up the score on any opponent,” the message read. “Although a wide-margin victory is never evidence of compassion, my girls played with honor and integrity and showed respect to Dallas Academy.”

His message ended with “So if I lose my job over these statements, I will walk away with my integrity.”

Sunday, school officials followed through, firing Grimes after four seasons.

Mark Cuban, the owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, saw the now highly-publicized story and has invited the Dallas Academy team to see a Mavericks game from his suite.

“Community Christian School just last week had a game against Harding Fine Arts Academy with a final score of 76 to 16.  The CCS girls basketball coaching staff was very sensitive of the score.  There was substitution.  They did take the opportunity to work on some different defensive and offensive plays.  The score could have been worse.  A coach works hard to demand the best play out of his or her team.  You cannot say “don’t play your best.”

I can’t believe they fired the Coach for winning. For a school not to score at all they had to really be bad.
